I'm coming out... Why I’m Done Hiding Behind the “Usual Accountant” Version of Me

Davinia McGann is a Chartered Accountant and Financially Grounded Business Coach helping female business owners understand their numbers and build financially sustainable businesses in a very different way to most accountants and business coaches.

I’ve been hiding.

Which feels strange to say given that I feel I post and email a fair amount… but I realise that in doing it, I haven’t really been me.

So in the words of the one and only Diana Ross - I’m coming out, and I want the world to know (come on, sing it with me…)

I'm not your usual Chartered Accountant.

I am also a qualified Group Fitness Instructor and indoor cycling coach. I’ve taught professional qualifications and vocational training for nearly 20 years. (I’m also a trained Barista but that’s not relevant here just yet)

But, I am spiritual (energy is important for business owners), I swear and I love an innuendo.

(But then in accounting you gotta do what you can to make it more fun, and given it’s all about double entry it just writes itself… right?)

Now, that’s not to say I’m crude or crass - the joy of delivering it is knowing when it is appropriate and when it isn’t. When teaching I still work with SEND students and am completely not-sweary so I am also responsible and reliable and professional. I can absolutely read a room.

Why this matters for small business owners

I’ve been a business owner - having opened and closed bricks and mortar businesses (and lost a lot of money in the process) - so I absolutely get the pressures on small business owners. And that even when you do enjoy something (to the point of teaching it…) sometimes you just don’t wanna.

And that inherent human ability to avoid the things you know you need to do - well I have it too.

I’m on a mission, and I think I need to ‘talk’ about it more loudly.

The Real DaM Good Business

I want to bring the fun into something that many female business owners hate (or at least significantly dislike).

I know it works - as an indoor cycling coach a big part of the job was helping people do the thing they knew they needed to do but didn’t always want to. And I was great at it.

I still have some doubts - having been ‘brought up’ in the corporate world, some of it rubbed off. What if people don’t like my cheeky, slightly sweary approach to the serious stuff? What if they think I don’t know what I’m talking about because I make fun of things? What if they don’t think I’m professional?

But then I have to remind my Leo self I am f*cking good at what I do and I have been doing it a long time. The teaching, the coaching, the helping other humans be their most awesome selves to reach their own potential.

I’m not perfect - no one is - but my combination of learned and lived experience, actual business battle scars, the ability to turn the complex into simple, tell stories and entertain are pretty damn unique.

So it’s time I owned it.

Which means... I’m coming out to say hello. Again.

Hiiiii, I’m Davinia.

Cheeky, sweary, intelligent, brilliant Davinia.

Chartered Accountant. Financially Grounded Business Coach. Financial Accountability Cheerleader. Your Personal Chief Encouragement Officer.

And I’m very excited to be right where I need to be.
